Tej (Ethiopian honey wine), is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages in existence. When the Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon, it was one of the gifts she brought to him. It is often served on wedding nights, hence the term “honeymoon”.
Ethiopian refugees went through an arduous journey, fleeing the fall of the Aksumite empire, in 825AD. When they found their new home, six seeds were planted, to symbolize a new beginning, and as a prayer for success.
When their decedents were taken as slaves to the New World, they brought Tej with them. They continued the tradition, by planting six seeds when they arrived safely in Louisiana, and six more to celebrate Juneteenth in Texas. We now bring the taste of Tej and the tradition of the six seeds to you.
